This was to showcase the wide range of talents cultivated and nourished by the NCCA through its Committee on Literary Arts and to affirm the Commission’s unwavering and continuing faith in (as well as investment on) the gift and fine art of writing in this country.<br /><br />Of course, given the ambition and magnitude of a literary event such as this, we just had to evolve the idea and open the assembly to those beyond the ambit of the NCCA largesse.<br /><br />TABOAN: The Philippines International Writers Festival 2009 is a celebration of the written word as it is practiced in our country today. For three days, it assembles writers from different regions for them to get to know one another, speak their minds out on various topics and issues of the day, and discover new ways of performing the word and turning it upside down. Senior and junior writers alike will be here—but especially the younger writers on whose enormous pool of talent the NCCA had kept faith in for more than a decade now. We have even invited—and we are happy they could come—two young writers from Vietnam and Thailand to partake of our feast of words.<br /><br />This Writers Festival, the first of its kind, is a work in progress. It is intended to be an annual event to look forward to, and to come up with new features and events that we hope you would not hesitate to recommend to us at the end of our three days together.<br /><br />We hope the Festival would be the beginning of interesting times and things for our writers. Be drunk always with words!
